The Statue of José Maria Morelos is a towering 130-foot statue located on the island of Janitzio in Lake Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, Mexico.
The statue was erected in 1933 to honor the memory of José Maria Morelos, a revolutionary leader during Mexico’s quest for independence who was executed by the Spanish government.
The statue features a spiraling stairway that leads to the top, where visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The stairway is adorned with sweeping murals that tell the hero’s story.
The statue is set on the hill in the center of the island, making it the most prominent part of the central-Mexican landscape. Standing with one proud fist in the air, the statue is almost reminiscent of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio
